Two Ospreys leave for Okinawa

OSAKA, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- Two Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft left the U.S. military's Iwakuni base in Yamaguchi Prefecture on Saturday afternoon for the U.S. Marine Corps Futenma Air Station in Okinawa Prefecture amid strong protest in Okinawa, local press reported.

The Ospreys were expected to fly out of Iwakuni Air Station on Saturday morning but the U.S. military delayed their departure. The aircraft took off at around 2:30 p.m. local time and are expected to arrive in Okinawa about three hours later.

The two Ospreys are among the 12 Ospreys which arrived at Iwakuni base on July 30 by ship. The Ospreys, which can take off and land like a helicopter and fly like an airplane, are the second batch to be deployed in Japan, following arrival of the first dozen last October.

The arrival of the aircraft will enable the U.S. military to deploy a total of 24 Ospreys to replace aging CH-46 helicopters in Okinawa, which hosts the bulk of U.S. troops in Japan.

The U.S. military's deployment of Ospreys has met strong opposition from Okinawa government and residents. Okinawa Governor Hirokazu Nakaima has repeatedly called for the cancellation of the deployment in the prefecture due to the aircraft's history of crashes.

Meanwhile, about 200 people rallied in front of the Futenma base on Saturday morning with about 60 of them staging a sit-in in front of the base's main gate in the city of Ginowan to protest the planned deployment of the controversial aircraft. Later, the opponents moved to a site across from the gate to hold a gathering against the Osprey deployment.
