Egypt's Sisi, U.S. Burns discuss political crisis

CAIRO, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- Egypt's military chief General Abdel- Fattah al-Sisi met here on Sunday with visiting U.S. Deputy Secretary of State William Burns to discuss the recent developments in the country, official MENA news agency reported.

The meeting touched on the current political crisis in Egypt and ongoing effects in the democratic transition process in the turmoil-stricken country.

Sisi and Burns underlined the necessity of renouncing violence and bloodshed and achieving national reconciliation in light of a roadmap put forth by the army for the transitional phase.

The meeting was attended by Egypt's Chief of Staff Sedki Sobhi and a number of senior army commanders as well as outgoing U.S. ambassador to Egypt Anne Patterson.

During his second visit to Cairo since the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi on July 3, Burns met on Saturday with top Egyptian officials, including interim President Adli Mansour, Vice President for foreign relations Mohamed ElBaradei as well as a group of loyalists to Morsi on the current political crisis.

Before his departure later on Sunday, the U.S. diplomat is scheduled to hold talks with Egyptian interim Prime Minister Hazem al-Beblawi.
